Gameplay
The game uses a top-down perspective in which the player, controls Link. At the beginning of the game, the player is limited to two characters that they can use, named "Link" and "Zelda". The game also contains a total of seven weapons, which are considered the basic weapons to use. These are the Bow and Arrow, Sword, and Shield. When the player explores a dungeon, they will find "Potions" which can be used to restore the health of the Link as well as "Masks" that can be used to become invisible. There are also the "Recall Arrow" and the "Bomb Bag" that can be used as offensive and defensive items.
The game is played in two main modes; the first one is the normal mode, where the player must explore the dungeons and defeat enemies that they encounter. The second mode is the Battle Mode, where there is no time limit and the player must defeat all the enemies in the dungeon in order to proceed to the next stage.
Reception
The Nintendo Entertainment System version of Legend of Zelda was critically acclaimed and is currently one of the most well-loved games in the series. Nintendo Power magazine noted that the game had large amounts of playability and replayability. Computer Gaming World praised the game, stating that the game was "impressive" in its graphics, gameplay, and replayability, and that the touch screen "adds to the game's potential as an educational tool". The magazine also praised the player's abilities in the control, stating that they were "well executed".
In a 1994 review, Electronic Gaming Monthly reviewed the game and scored it a 9.0 out of 10. The reviewers called the game "one of the best games available" for the NES, and said that the game was innovative in its use of the cartridge's hardware. However, they criticized the game's lack of a password system to protect the game and the difficulty of the game, and called the game's controls "not as intuitive as you might expect."
In their 1995 "Greatest Hits" article, Nintendo Power ranked Legend of Zelda as the 8th-best Nintendo Entertainment System game in their "Top 20" list.
